Embracing Adventure: Traveling After a Lung Transplant
Rediscovering the World
My wife, Susan, and I have embarked on countless adventures around the globe, exploring diverse landscapes and cultures via trains, planes, ships, and automobiles. However, our latest journey to Amsterdam marks a significant milestone — our first international trip since 2019.
1. A Journey of Resilience
In January 2017, I was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), prompting my care team to encourage me to live life to the fullest. Despite the challenges posed by my condition, Susan and I remained determined to explore the world together.
2. Navigating the Pandemic
When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, my care team advised against unnecessary travel, particularly given the progression of my IPF. Despite being approved for a lung transplant in March 2020, I deferred the procedure due to the pandemic. It wasn’t until July 2021 that I finally underwent a bilateral lung transplant, further postponing our travel plans.
3. Preparing for the Journey
As seasoned travelers, we meticulously planned our trip to Amsterdam, taking into account my post-transplant needs. Consultations with my care team ensured that we were well-prepared for any potential health challenges during our travels.
4. Managing Medications
Packing for the trip posed unique challenges, especially considering my medication requirements as a post-transplant patient. Following my care team’s advice, we packed double the amount of medication needed for the duration of our journey, ensuring we were adequately prepared for any unforeseen circumstances.
5. Fulfilling Dreams in Amsterdam
Our decision to visit Amsterdam was driven by Susan’s long-held desire to witness the blooming tulips. As we embark on a seven-night “Tulip Time” river cruise aboard the AmaLucia, we eagerly anticipate experiencing the vibrant colors of the tulip fields in full bloom.
Seizing Every Opportunity
Despite the hurdles posed by my health journey, Susan and I remain committed to embracing life’s adventures. Our trip to Amsterdam symbolizes resilience, determination, and the unwavering pursuit of dreams, reminding us to make every breath count.
