The Academy’s New Rules for the 97th Oscars

Overview of the Changes

The Academy’s Board of Governors has announced significant updates to the awards rules and campaign regulations for the upcoming 97th Oscars ceremony, scheduled for March 2.

Original Score Category Revamp

One of the most notable changes affects the original score category. Now, up to three composers can each receive individual Oscar statuettes if they significantly contribute to a film’s music. This is a departure from previous rules, which required composers to submit as a group. For instance, the band Son Lux faced this requirement for their nomination for the best picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Similarly, Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor, and Atticus Ross, winners for the animated film “Soul” (2020), received a single statuette. The definition of a group now includes a recognized band.

Expansion of Shortlist

Furthermore, the shortlist in the original score category has been expanded from 15 to 20 titles. This expanded shortlist will be announced in late December, just before the official nomination voting period begins in January.

 Embracing Diversity and Collaboration

These changes reflect the Academy’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating diverse contributions to the film industry. By allowing up to three composers to be individually honored and expanding the shortlist, the Oscars continue to evolve to reflect the dynamic landscape of filmmaking.
