‘Titanic’, directed by James Cameron, became a box-office hit and made Kate and her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio megastars.
Actress Kate Winslet has disclosed that she was unprepared for the magnitude of additional attention she received following her role in ‘Titanic’.
The 1997 cinematic masterpiece helmed by James Cameron skyrocketed to immense popularity, propelling Kate and her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio into the realm of superstardom.
“I found myself compelled to conform to certain standards, or embody a specific persona, and due to the pervasive media intrusion of that era, my existence was rather unpleasant,” Kate revealed to Porter Magazine, as reported by deadline.com.
The thespian further articulated, “Reporters incessantly asserted, ‘Following Titanic, you had the world at your feet and yet you opted for these minor projects’… to which I retorted, ‘Absolutely! Because, let me assure you, attaining fame was excruciating.'”
“Admittedly, I was appreciative. I was in my formative twenties, and I was fortunate enough to secure a residence. However, I harbored no desire to be incessantly trailed while engaging in mundane activities like feeding the waterfowl.”
Now aged 48, Kate professes that the concept of fame is “absurd” and no longer views it as a “burden”.
“(Titanic) continues to elicit immense delight among audiences,” she observes. “The sole instance where I feel compelled to withdraw is when I find myself aboard a vessel.”
Kate has been candid about her ordeals with the media during her youth, which instilled a sense of self-consciousness regarding her physique.
In a feature published by Vogue in September 2023, Kate expounded on the necessity of fortitude to execute a topless scene for the film Lee.
“I had to summon immense courage to present my body in its most natural state and not shy away from that,” she conveyed to the periodical.
Kate attributed it all to having endured relentless scrutiny and condemnation, even bordering on harassment, from the mainstream media during her twenties.
